How Reading Helps our Students Succeed

At Co-op Academy Manchester, we know that being a confident reader is one of the most powerful tools a young person can have.

Reading opens up new ideas, builds vocabulary, and helps students succeed in every subject. And it gives our young people the skills and confidence they need to thrive in life beyond the school gates.

We want every student to fall in love with books, so we make reading a part of everyday life across our school community.

In the classroom, simple tools like reading rulers make a huge difference, helping students follow text easily and focus on the story. During form time, students in Years 7, 8 and 9 read a book together. Our Year 7s are currently enjoying Quiet Storm, Year 8s are exploring the survival story Hatchet, and Year 9s are reading the thought-provoking Noughts & Crosses. To keep up the momentum at home, Year 7s are set home learning on Sparx Reader.

Our staff love reading too, and students are inspired by posters on office and classroom doors showing what we are currently enjoying.

At the heart of it all is our beautiful, well-stocked library. It is open before school, after school, at break, and at lunchtime. Students can pick up a book at our breakfast club pop-up library, test their word skills with 'Boggle Bob', join our Carnegie Shadowing group, or take on responsibility as a student librarian. We also run exciting poetry competitions and offer an ePlatform service, letting students access eBooks and audiobooks on their own devices at home.

By building a strong reading culture together, we are helping every child build a brighter future.
