Important notice regarding electric scooters & electric bikes

As of 20 April 2026, we will no longer allow the use and storage of electric scooters and electric bikes (e-scooters and e-bikes) by students travelling to and from school.

The decision to prohibit these items from the school site has been made with the safety of all our students in mind, particularly concerning the journey to and from school.

Current UK Law (as of March 2026):

  • Age restrictions: You must be at least 16 years old to ride an e-scooter

  • Private e-scooters: It is currently illegal to ride privately-owned e-scooters on public roads, pavements, cycle lanes, or in public spaces

  • Rental schemes only: E-scooters can only be legally ridden as part of government-approved rental schemes in designated trial areas

  • Where you CAN ride: Private e-scooters can only be used on private land with the landowner's permission

  • Driving licence: Riders need a full or provisional car, motorcycle, or moped licence

  • Insurance: Rental e-scooters have insurance included, but private e-scooters would need insurance to be road-legal (which isn't currently possible)

Acceptable Modes of Transport

We continue to encourage students to travel to school by safe and sustainable means. Students are still very welcome to use standard (non-electric) scooters and bicycles, which can be stored securely in the bike shed at the front of the academy.

We understand that this change may require alternative arrangements for some families, and we appreciate your support in implementing this important safety measure.

If your child currently uses these items, please ensure you discuss this change with them before the Easter break to prevent any issues on their return to school.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Yours faithfully,

Co-op Academy Manchester
