Careers support for Year 11 students

Students leaving secondary education are, by law, expected to continue in education or training until they are at least 18 years of age. They will have a choice as to how they progress after leaving school (Post 16).
The following options are available:
-
Full-time study in a Sixth Form or college
-
An apprenticeship
During the autumn term, students will be invited for a confidential career chat with Mrs Godfrey, Careers Adviser, to discuss their plans and explore the options available to them after Year 11. We strongly advise that students attend, whether they feel confident with their plans or are unsure about what they want to do in the future. Ongoing support will be available throughout the year.
Appointments for parents and carers wishing to speak with Mrs Godfrey are also available after school – please email manc-careersteam@coopacademies.co.uk
College open days
A list of college open days can be found here. Please check individual college websites for full information, including how to pre-register. We encourage students to attend college open days in order to look around the facilities and talk with staff and students.
Applying to college
College prospectuses are available in the academy.
We will be offering help and support with completing college application forms after the October half term break. The deadline for completion is Friday 5 December 2025 (please note this is our own internal deadline). We can’t guarantee that students who apply to the more competitive Sixth Form colleges after this deadline will be offered an interview. It is advisable to apply to more than one college, and keep all options open until next year.
The majority of applications will be online. Students should have a valid email address (not their school one), which colleges can contact them on, and regularly check college online portals for regular updates about interviews and offers.
Applying for apprenticeships
Applications for apprenticeships are available throughout the year, with vacancies for school-leavers advertised around Easter time. We recommend students also apply for a college course as a backup to apprenticeships, as there is no guarantee of a job. We will provide support for students wishing to apply for an apprenticeship.
