Friday drop-ins

Students are encouraged to "drop-in" to speak with the careers team on Friday lunch times. The focus recently has been on supporting Year 11 students with college and apprenticeship applications and interviews.

National Apprenticeship Week

Information was shared with all year groups via assemblies, screens around the academy and Google Classrooms. Mrs Davey was on hand during break, lunch and after school to answer any questions students might have.

Hopwood Hall College assembly

Hopwood Hall delivered an assembly to Year 11, giving them an invaluable insight into the various routes available for students, and the courses that they offer.

Organised by the JD Foundation (the charity arm of JD Sports), the interactive morning held at Manchester Central Convention Centre was designed to give students a behind-the-scenes look at the company. During the event, students were able to chat directly with JD Sports staff from all different departments to learn about the wide variety of jobs that keep the business running.

It was a brilliant and informative day that gave our students valuable insight into their future career possibilities!

Getting future-ready with LTSB

28 of our Year 10 students took part in the FutureYou programme, delivered by LTSB. Through four engaging workshops, students learned valuable skills to help them prepare for the world of work: developing transferable skills; making informed choices; interview techniques; being at work.

The students headed out on an exciting trip to see a real business in action!

Students were given a behind-the-scenes look at a professional office environment at the Davies Group in Bolton. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to explore corporate careers, boost their confidence, practice their communication, and find out exactly what employers expect from their teams.

Careers week for Years 9 & 10

Our Year 9 and 10 students recently took part in a dedicated Careers Week to help them prepare for life after Year 11. To ensure they got the most out of the experience, students attended prep sessions beforehand.

The week featured three main events:

  • Year 10 Mock Interviews: 52 volunteers from local businesses and colleges helped our Year 10s practice their skills. Students had 30-minute interviews and received valuable written and verbal feedback. The volunteers were incredibly impressed by how prepared and mature our students were!

  • Post-16 Fair: Students explored their future educational routes—including college, apprenticeship, and university options—by speaking directly with post-16 providers and university reps from Greater Manchester Higher.

  • Interactive Careers Fair: A wide range of employers and professionals set up exhibitions to give students a hands-on look at different job roles, sectors, and career paths.

It was a fantastic week that gave our students the knowledge and confidence to start planning their futures!

Inspiring the next generation: 'Black Girl Spaces' visit

We were delighted to welcome three current Cambridge University students for an empowering session – "Black Girl Spaces".

The visitors met with a group of Year 9 and 10 students to pull back the curtain on life at the prestigious university. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to hear first-hand accounts of the Cambridge experience; from the routes that led them to university, to advice about applying.

Learning from the experts at KPMG

70 Year 8 students took part in a three-hour workshop hosted by KPMG. The session was designed to give students a real taste of the business world and build their professional skills.

During the workshop, the students:

  • Explored Careers: Learnt about the different types of jobs available at the company and watched videos of staff describing what a typical day at work looks like.

  • Solved Problems: Teamed up to work on a real-life business task (a case study) and brainstormed solutions together.

  • Practised Presenting: Stood up and shared their team's ideas with the rest of the room. To help build their public speaking confidence, every single student was required to speak during the presentation!

By working through the activities, students discovered a range of career opportunities, identified their personal skills, and started to build the knowledge they will need to make informed choices about their education and career after Year 11.

A great first step in helping our youngest students connect what they learn in school to their eventual transition into the workplace.
